Act
20:17-24, 25-35
From Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the
church. And when they were
come to him, he said to them, You know, from the first day that I
came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all
seasons, serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many
tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the
Jews: how
I kept back nothing that was profitable,
for
you,
but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to
house, testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks,
repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord, Christ Jesus. And
now, behold, I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the
things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesses
in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none
of these things move me, neither count I my life dear to myself, so
that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I
have received of the Lord Christ Jesus, to testify His Gospel, the
Grace of God.
Behold,
I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the
kingdom of God,
shall see my face no more. Wherefore I take you to record (account)
this day, that I am
pure from the blood of all men.
For I have not shunned to declare
to you all the
counsel of God.
Take heed therefore to yourselves, and to all the flock, over the
which the Holy Ghost has made you overseers, to feed the church of
God, which He has purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that
after my departing shall grievous wolves (will)
enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves
shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples
after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three
years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And
now, I commend you to God, and to the
word of His Grace (this
is Christ),
which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among
all them which are sanctified.
I have coveted no man's silver, or
gold, or apparel. Yes, you yourselves know, that these hands have
ministered to my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have
showed you all things, how that so laboring you ought to support the
weak, and to remember the words of the Lord, Christ Jesus, how He
said, It
is more blessed to give than to receive.
Acts
28:15-16, 17-22, 23-29, 30-31
When the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii
forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and
took courage. And when we
came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of
the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier
that kept him.
It
came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews
together: and when they were come together, he said to them, Men and
brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or
customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem
into the hands of the Romans. Who, when they had examined me, would
have let me
go, because there was no cause of death in me. But when the Jews
spoke against me,
I was constrained to appeal to Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse
my nation offense. For this cause therefore have I called for you, to
see you,
and to speak with you:
because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. And
they said to him, We neither received letters out of Judea concerning
you, neither any of the brethren that came showed or spoke any harm
of you. But we desire to hear from you what you think: as concerning
this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
When
they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his
lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the
kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Christ Jesus, both out of the law of
Moses, and the prophets, from morning till evening. And some believed
the things which were spoken, and some believed not. And when they
agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had
spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet to
our fathers, saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing you shall
hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and not
perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears
are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they
should see with their
eyes, and hear with their
ears, and understand with their
heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Be it known
therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles,
and that
they will hear it. And when he had said these words, the Jews
departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
Paul
dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that
came to him, preaching (proclaiming)
the
kingdom of God,
and teaching those things which concern the Lord, Christ Jesus, with
all confidence, no man forbidding him.
