Jesus
Heals a Sinner and Reveals the Pharisees Error
Luke
7:36-50
One of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And He
went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. And,
behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, when she knew that
Jesus
sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of
ointment, and stood at His feet behind Him
weeping, and began to wash His feet with tears, and did wipe them
with the hairs of her head, and kissed His feet, and anointed them
with the ointment. Now
when the Pharisee which had bidden Him saw it,
he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet,
would have known who and what manner of woman this
is
that touches Him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus said to him, Simon,
I have somewhat to say to you.
And he said, Master, say on. There
was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five
hundred pence, and the other fifty.
And
when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell Me
therefore, which of them will love him most?
To this Simon answered, I suppose that he,
to whom he forgave most. And He said to him, You
have rightly judged.
And He turned to the woman, and said to Simon, See
this woman? I entered into your house, you gave Me no water for My
feet: but she has washed My feet with tears, and wiped
them
with
the hairs of her head. You gave Me no kiss: but this woman since the
time I came in has not ceased to kiss My feet.
And
anointed
My head with oil which you did not do: but this woman has anointed My
feet with ointment.
Wherefore
I say to you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved
much: but to whom little is forgiven,
the
same
loves
little.
He said to her, Your
sins are forgiven.
They that sat at meat with Him began to say within themselves, Who is
this that forgives sins also? And He said to the woman, Your
faith has saved you; go in peace. (parallel
passages Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, John12:1-8)
The
following is not part of Matthew 23:1-36 which includes the eight
woes, this passage follows them.
Jesus
Denounces the Pharisees and Lawyers
in the following the woes in verses
37 through 47. The following is a parallel to it.
Luke
11:48-54
Truly
you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they
indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers.
Therefore also said the wisdom of
God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and
some of
them they shall slay and persecute:
That
the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of
the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel
to the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the
temple: verily I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.Woe to you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in you hinder. As He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge Him vehemently, and to provoke Him to speak of many things: Laying wait for Him, and seeking to catch something out of His mouth, that they might accuse Him. (parallel passages Matthew 23:1-36, Mark 12:38-40, Luke 20:45-47)
Both John the Baptist and Jesus used strong language to denounce the heresy and hypocrisy of the Priest's in the new religion of Judaism which had its roots during the time of Ezra and after their Babylonian captivity. These Priest's accepted and tolerated the blending of a marriage of fornication and idolatry with those pagan symbols not tolerated by their predecessors. The land scape of Israel had grown heavy with idols and shrines to the pagan gods of all kinds from that time forward, even the cakes used in temple worship had become hot cross buns by their appearance. Not to mention the unfair exchange of money and animals in the temple courts which caused Jesus' making a whip of cords to drive out the corruption.
All
Hypocrisy Will Be Revealed
Luke
12:1-3, 4-7
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable
multitude of people, insomuch that they trod one upon another, He
began to say to His disciples first of all, Beware
the
leaven of the Pharisees, which
is
hypocrisy.
For
there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid,
that shall not be known.
Therefore
whatever you have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and
that which you have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed
upon the housetops.(parallel
passage Matthew 16:5-12, Mark 8:14-21) Our churches (many of them mainline) of this day have not heeded this warning by way of their customs, religious rites, rituals and ceremonies have committed the same crimes that the Religious leaders of Jesus' day and before did. In fact because this church of the world promotes a from of self sufficiency and self will or self righteousness in lawlessness through its own, and they be many, holidays under the guise of pretense of righteousness mock both GOD and the LORD of righteousness, in the act of heresy and hypocrisy.
Fear
God not man
I
say to you My friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and
after that have no more that they can do.
But I will forewarn you whom you
shall fear: Fear Him, which after He has killed has power to cast
into hell; yes, I say to you, Fear Him.
Are not five sparrows sold for two
farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
But even the very hairs of your head are
all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many
sparrows. (parallel passage Matthew
10:28-31)
