After
Jesus' Crucifixion and Burial
Matthew
27:62-66
The next day, that followed the day of the preparation*, the chief
priests and Pharisees came together** to Pilate, saying
to him, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while He was yet
alive, that after three days I will rise again. Therefore command
that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest His
disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say to the people,
He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the
first. Pilate said to them, you have a watch: go your way, make it
as secure as you can. So they went, and made the sepulcher secure,
sealing it with a stone, and setting a watch. *Mark 15:42, the day before the sabbath, when the animals are inspected for blemishes.
**These were the inveterate and implacable enemies of Christ Jesus; they took counsel how to put him to death. They subordinated false witnesses against Him; they moved the people to prefer Barabbas to Him; they got Him condemned to death, and followed Him to the cross, where they mocked Him; and still, like the troubled sea, they are restless and uneasy; for though He was dead, they feared His resurrection; and though they could not prevent the thing, they consulted to hinder the credit of it.
Levi
(Matthew) called out
Mark
2:13-14, 15-17, 18-22, 23-28
He went by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted to Him, and
He taught them as they went. As
they passed by, He saw Levi the son
of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow
me.
And he arose and followed Him.
As Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and His disciples: for there were many, that followed Him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eat with publicans and sinners, they said to His disciples, How is it that He eats and drinks with publicans and sinners? Jesus heard it, and He said to them, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (parallel passages Matthew 9:9-13, Luke 5:27-32)
Jesus
Teaches on Fasting and
the
Blending of His own Gospel message with the false
The
disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come
and asked Him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees
fast, but your disciples fast not? To this
Jesus said to them, Can
the children of the bride chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with
them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot
fast.
But
the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from
them, and then shall they fast in those days.
No
man also sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new
piece that filled it up takes away from the old, and the rent is made
worse.
And
no man puts new wine into old bottles: else the new wine burst the
bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but
new wine must be put into new bottles. (parallel
passages Matthew 9:14-17, Luke 5:33-39) Why does the true Christlike one not fast as those of the hypocrisy do? Because they are seated at the right hand of the LORD in His Glory even though still here on earth, how by faith. They are at His right hand in a position of respect and power which is where a bride and the betrothed sits with her bridegroom at the head of the table. And because our table is nothing short of being our alter, the cross of Christ, where all others may eat only upon request. To assume to eat at this table is a great disrespect because they have not rightly divided and delineated (this is the meaning of the title of the book of “Jasher”) the revelation of Christ and the meaning of His Passover as Paul reveals in 1Corinthians 11 and Hebrews.
The
Pharisees Question Jesus,
Who
is Lord of the Sabbath
It
came to pass, that He went through the corn fields on the sabbath
day; and His disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of
corn. And the Pharisees said to
Him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
To this He said, Have you never read
what David did, when he had need, and was an hungered, he, and they
that were with him? How
he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high
priest, and did eat the show bread, which is not lawful to eat but
for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
He said further to them, The sabbath
was made for man (look at Genesis 1:27,
31), and not man for the sabbath:
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of
the sabbath. (parallel passages
Matthew 12:1-8, Luke 6:1-5)Luke 5:17-26 It came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. When He saw their faith, He said to him, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? When Jesus perceived their thoughts, He said to them, Why reason you in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Your sins be forgiven; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has power upon earth to forgive sins, (He said to the sick of the palsy,) I say to you, Arise, and take up your couch, and go into your house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. (parallel passages Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12)
